Krakow Women’s Trail

The “Krakow Women’s Trail” project is an educational and research initiative carried out by the Jewish Association Czulent in 2009–2010, as a continuation of the project “Polish Women, Jewish Women – Krakow Emancipation Activists.” Its aim was to restore the memory of women connected with Krakow who—regardless of their social, cultural, or religious background—co-created the history of the city and played a significant role in emancipation processes. The project addressed the problem of women’s invisibility in official historical narratives, textbooks, and city guides, which often overlook their contributions to social development and the struggle for equality.

Education on equality, democracy, and women’s heritage

The activities carried out in the project focused on promoting knowledge about the history of women and their role in building democracy and civil society. Through educational and research initiatives, the project highlighted women’s struggle for voting rights, access to education and the labor market, as well as their individual strategies for overcoming restrictive social norms. The “Krakow Women’s Trail” strengthened public awareness of gender equality and emphasized the importance of emancipatory experiences as an integral part of Poland’s history.

Restoring the memory of women and the history of emancipation in Krakow

The project contributed to recovering and disseminating knowledge about the forgotten heroines of Krakow’s history, incorporating them into the shared memory of the city’s residents. Its significance was also recognized in the public sphere—in 2010, the “Krakow Women’s Trail” received the Kulturalne Odloty award from Gazeta Wyborcza in the Event of the Year category. The project stands as an example of effectively combining historical research, equality education, and social activities, strengthening the organization’s position as an expert in the field of women’s heritage and anti-discrimination education.
